Today was a busy day for finding dentist jobs in my office. I had seven dentists email me their resumes today and half of them were recent dental school graduates. The first bills for the student loans they took out must have arrived over the weekend!! Time to get going on finding a great dentist job. And you don't really have time to worry about what the economy either. However in your rush to secure employment, avoid some of the blunders that entry-level dentists make when entering the job market.
- Probably on of the biggest errors made by dentists when seeking employment is that they don't have anyone read their CV prior to sending it out. So if you learn anything from this article, remember to have somebody proofread your CV.
- Next, try to target a job that you can stay at for at least the next 2 to 3 years. Think long-term. Don't worry that your classmate made $25,000 more than you did in her first year. Job longevity is very important. Job hopping dentists are not wealthy dentists, and they also don't add much value to the practices they join.
- Many new grads will find employment with a dental clinic or one of the big dental employers. Don't downplay the significance of that. These companies are extremely profitable and they pay a premium to make sure that they are well staffed. Sure, they have a high turnover of dentists, but view it as an incredible opportunity to gain invaluable experience.
- Don't forget to consider the military as an option for entry-level dentists. Also, correctional facilities are always looking for dentists to hire. These types of dentists jobs may not be on the top of your priority list, but they can act as a huge springboard to launching your career in dentistry.
Now dentists, don't forget to mail in that first check to start repaying your student loan. It won't hurt. I promise, you won't feel a thing.
